COCHEM ON THE MOSELLE |
 COCHEM
We had driven across country for miles, totally lost, when a signboard loomed up in the headlights, through the increasing mist. It said "Cochem" so we headed for it, and arrived just as the fog closed in. We saw the signs for a Campingplatz and drove along a riverbank, with a horrifying drop to the rushing waters just to our left.
 RECEPTION, SHOP AND LOOS
We signed in at reception, were given a parking spot and in the light of our headlamps, threw up our tent, and crashed out into our sleeping bags.
We were awakened by faint music and the sound of children laughing. A horn sounded and we heard people hurrying to our right. I opened the tent flap to see that the mist still covered the area but a wan sun was trying hard to break through.. We saw people walking down to the riverside where a Rhine-type steamer was loading.
RIVER STEAMER AND THE CASTLE, COCHEM
We set up a hot breakfast and boiled a welcome cup of tea. We looked at our maps to see where we were and found Cochem. The map showed a Castle but in the mist we could barely see the river (which we found to be the Moselle)
As if by magic the thick fog was replaced by dancing clouds of mist as the temperature rose, and we could now feel the heat of the sun. Suddenly out of the mist there appeared a high building which turned out to be a beautiful castle on a hill. We took a deep breath in awe and we stood as the castle solidified and started reflecting the sun.
