The hotel originally dates back to 1826, but was extensively rebuilt in 1912 to cater for passenger's from large cruise liners, whose home port was Liverpool. 
Namely all the White Star Line ships, who were based in Liverpool, the most famous of which was the Titanic.  Indeed the Sefton suite in the hotel is an exact replica of the Smoking Lounge aboard the Titanic.
